Soft, watered tee
Peg goes in easily, sits where you put it, and stays there. This is the control condition and it flatters everything, which is exactly why it cannot be the only one.
Almost every driver complaint that arrives here is described as a distance problem and turns out to be a contact problem. Before anything gets swapped, we spend twenty minutes establishing where on the face you meet the ball and how much that location wanders.
Foot spray on the face, five swings, wipe, repeat. Four blocks. What comes out is not a single dot but a cloud, and the shape of that cloud tells you more than any single number on the monitor.
A tight cloud sitting half an inch above centre is a loft and length conversation. A wide cloud smeared from heel to toe is a length and balance conversation, and possibly a grip one. A cloud that sits low on the face with a steep delivery is usually a tee height and ball position conversation that costs you nothing at all.
Tee height. Roughly one session in six ends with a player buying nothing, changing where the equator of the ball sits against the crown, and picking up ball speed they already owned. We would rather find that in the first half hour than at the end of a fitting you paid full price for.
Nobody hits a driver out of settled rough on purpose, so rungs three and four are skipped. What we substitute is a second surface that matters enormously in this valley and is almost never tested: a hard, dry, over-used tee box.
Rung one

Rung two
From July onward a well used tee box in Fresno is essentially a paved surface with a green tint. The peg will not go in to the depth you are used to, so your effective tee height drops without you consciously changing anything. Players with a shallow, sweeping delivery lose real launch to this every summer and blame the driver.
Measuring both means your card carries two launch numbers instead of one, and the loft we set is the one that holds up across both rather than the one that maximises the soft-tee figure.

The order matters. Change the shaft first and the strike cloud shifts, which invalidates the head comparison you did ten minutes earlier. We hold length constant while comparing heads, hold the head constant while comparing shafts, and only then start trimming.
Trimming is where most sessions end up. The stock length on a modern driver suits a minority of the people who buy one, and half an inch off frequently tightens a cloud more than any component change on the rack. It also costs almost nothing, which is presumably why it is unpopular with people who sell drivers.
Bring the current one even if you are certain it is finished. Bring the ball you actually play, not a sleeve of something premium you bought for the occasion — a fitting done on a ball you will not use produces a build tuned for a ball you will not use.
If you have an old driver in the garage that you liked better, bring that too. It is often the most useful club in the room, because it is direct evidence about what your hands prefer.
