The Letter On The Label Is The Least Useful Number

Bao sorted this shop's racks by measured profile over the winter of 2019 and it took him four months. The reason it was worth four months is on this page: two shafts stamped with the same letter, from two catalogues, can behave so differently that swapping one for the other changes a ladder card in every column.

None of what follows is a buying guide. We do not publish recommended models, because a recommendation without your delivery numbers attached to it is decoration. What this page is for is vocabulary. If you read it before you arrive, the ninety minutes we spend together stops being a lecture and starts being a conversation.

Where the letters came from

Nobody Agreed On What Stiff Means, And Nobody Ever Will

There is no governing standard behind R, S, X or any of the half-letters that have appeared since. Each manufacturer sets its own bands, usually anchored to whatever its own previous generation did, and those anchors drift generation to generation. The result is a market where a stiff from one house measures softer through the butt than a regular from another and stiffer than both through the tip.

That is not a scandal and nobody is lying. A shaft is a tube whose wall thickness and material orientation change along its length, and reducing that to one character was always going to lose information. The letter survives because it is a useful first filter for a retail rack that has to serve everybody. It stops being useful the moment somebody measures the shaft.

How the rack is actually labelled here

Every shaft on the wall carries a hand-written tag with four things on it: butt frequency, mid-section frequency, tip-section frequency, and raw weight measured on our scale rather than taken from the box. The manufacturer's letter is on the tag too, in smaller writing, mostly so we can find a specific model when somebody asks for it by name.

Five Things That Change A Reading, In Rough Order Of Effect

These are ordered by how often changing them moved a number on somebody's card here, which is not the same order you will find them discussed online.

One

Raw weight

The single most reliable lever we have. Weight changes tempo, tempo changes where the low point of the arc sits, and low point is what decides whether you catch turf before ball on the second rung. Players routinely arrive convinced they need a different flex and leave with the same flex twelve grams lighter.

Two

Butt section stiffness

What your hands feel and what most people are describing when they say a shaft feels boardy or whippy. It has less to do with launch than people assume and much more to do with whether you can sense where the head is at the top of the backswing.

Three

Tip section stiffness

Where the launch and spin conversation lives, and where trimming does its work. A soft tip adds dynamic loft late in the downswing; a firm one holds the head back. On the collar rung this is also what decides how much the grass can twist the head before impact.

Four

Length

Technically an assembly decision rather than a shaft property, but it changes every measured property once installed, so it belongs on the list. Half an inch is a bigger intervention than most component swaps and it costs nothing.

Five

Torque

Last, and genuinely last. Torque figures are measured differently by different houses, the published range across a category is narrow, and in eleven years the number of sessions where torque alone explained a result is small enough to count. It matters most in very light graphite and almost not at all in steel.

Not on the list

Kick point

A single named point on a shaft is a summary of a curve, and summaries hide the interesting part. We measure the curve in three zones instead and never write the phrase on a card. If you have been told you need a mid-launch shaft, bring the club and we will find out what that actually meant.

Steel and graphite

The Old Argument Is Mostly Over

For twenty years the split was simple: graphite in woods, steel in irons, graphite in irons only if your hands hurt. That has stopped being true, and the change has been driven less by marketing than by graphite iron shafts finally becoming consistent enough that two samples of the same model measure the same.

What we see on the ladder now is that the material matters less than the weight band and the damping. Graphite absorbs more of the shock from a fat strike on hard ground, which in a valley summer is not a small consideration. Steel gives a sharper report from the strike, which some players use as feedback and others find distracting. Neither is correct.

Trimming

The Chart In The Box Is A Starting Point, Not An Instruction

Every shaft arrives with a trim chart telling you how much to remove from the tip for each club in the set. Those charts are written to make a shaft behave roughly as intended for a typical assembly, and they are perfectly reasonable. They also assume a head weight, a target length and a playing profile that may have nothing to do with yours.

Arman re-measures frequency after every tip trim, which sounds pedantic and is not. Removing a quarter inch from a tip does not change the shaft by a predictable, published amount — it depends on the wall profile in that specific section of that specific model. Two shafts that started within two cycles of each other can end up nine apart after identical trims.

On a full set this compounds. A set trimmed to chart and never verified can carry a frequency slope with a kink in the middle, and the club at the kink is the one you never quite trust. Every set built at this bench gets its slope plotted before the grips go on, and the plot goes on the reverse of your ladder card.

What we will not do

We do not soft-step or hard-step a set as a substitute for choosing the right shaft. It is a legitimate technique and it works, but it is frequently used to make an unsuitable shaft acceptable rather than to fine-tune a suitable one. If the answer is a different profile, we will say so and it will cost less than a rescue.

Before you buy anything

Four Questions Worth Asking A Fitter, Anywhere

  • What did you measure, and can I see it? A fitting that produces a model name and no numbers is a sale. Ask for the frequency, the weight and the length that were actually recorded.
  • What would you have to change to get me a different answer? A good fitter can tell you exactly which variable is carrying the recommendation. If nobody can, the recommendation is not resting on much.
  • How much of this is the shaft and how much is the length? These get conflated constantly and only one of them costs three hundred dollars.
  • What happens if I do nothing? Sometimes the honest answer is that you lose three yards and no accuracy. That is a legitimate outcome and you deserve to hear it.

Ask us those four. We would rather answer them than have you spend money on a change you cannot explain to yourself six months later.
