The Collar Rung: Where Kikuyu Takes Its Cut

If you have played golf anywhere in Central California you have stood over a ball perched perfectly on top of a strip of dense, wiry grass at the edge of a green, thought this is fine, and then watched the ball go thirty feet left of where you aimed it.
That grass is almost certainly kikuyu. It is a warm-season species that took over a great many courses in this state because it survives heat and traffic that would kill anything else, and it is the reason the third rung of our ladder exists at all.
The original plot in 2011 had two surfaces, cut grass and rough. It caught the obvious failures and missed this one entirely, because kikuyu does not behave like rough. It behaves like a third thing, and clubs that sail through deep fescue can be genuinely unpleasant out of a kikuyu edge.
Why the lie looks so good and plays so badly
Kikuyu grows with thick lateral runners that knit into a dense mat. When a ball comes to rest on it, the mat holds the ball up rather than letting it settle, so you get a lie that sits proud of the surface and invites a clean strike. Visually it is closer to a tee than to rough.
What the eye does not register is that the mat is still there, underneath and around, and it is considerably stronger than it looks. The clubhead has to travel through it to reach the ball. Deep rough resists across the whole face and slows everything down in a way you can feel and account for. Kikuyu resists selectively, and where it resists is the hosel.
The distinguishing feature of a collar lie is not how much it slows the head. It is how much it turns the head, and how little warning you get.
What the numbers look like
On the ladder, the third rung produces a smaller speed loss than most people predict and a much larger dispersion change than they predict. A player who loses seven percent of ball speed on rung three might well lose fifteen percent on rung four, so on speed alone the collar looks like the easier surface.
Then you look at where the balls went. Rung four scatters roughly symmetrically because the grass is resisting everything. Rung three scatters left, consistently, for a right-handed golfer, and the amount varies enormously by head.

The third head is the slowest and it is obviously the right answer for this player. Anybody fitting on speed alone picks the first one, and that golfer spends a season quietly pulling every approach he plays from a green surround.
The three features that survive a collar
Over eleven years of running this rung, three head properties keep separating the clubs that hold their line from the clubs that do not.
Mass distributed toward the toe
A head with more of its mass out toward the toe resists closing when the grass grabs the heel end. This is the same physics that makes a heel strike close the face, applied to an external force rather than an off-centre hit. It is also why a small number of players find that a head marketed for its forgiveness is actively better for them out of collars than a compact one they hit beautifully off short grass.
Hosel setback
How far the hosel sits behind the leading edge changes how much grass reaches it before the face does. A pronounced setback means the leading edge arrives first and cuts a path; a flush hosel arrives at the same moment as the face and takes the full load. Neither is universally better, because setback also changes what the club looks like at address and how it presents on a clean lie.
A tip section that is not too soft
This one surprises people because it is a shaft property rather than a head property. A soft tip lets the head lag and then release aggressively into impact, which is desirable on clean turf and unhelpful when an external force is already trying to rotate the head. Two or three sessions a year end with a player in the same head and a firmer tip purely on the strength of the collar rung.
A note on how the patch is maintained
Nayeli keeps the collar patch at about an inch and a half and lets it knit properly rather than scarifying it, because a kikuyu collar that has been groomed loose is not the surface anybody plays off. It gets edged monthly to stop it colonising the bare ground patch, which it attempts constantly and would happily do in a season.
What this changes about what you carry
Two practical consequences come out of this rung more often than any others.
The first is that a lot of golfers who use a lofted hybrid from the collar would be better off with a different club entirely, because a hybrid's shallow face and long hosel is close to the worst possible combination against a lateral grabbing force. That is a conversation for a hybrid session and it does not always end where people expect.
The second is that if your miss from around the green is a pull, and it only happens off that particular strip of grass, the answer may have nothing to do with your technique. Bring the club in. Fifteen minutes on the third rung will tell us whether the head is turning before impact, and if it is, that is a hardware problem with a hardware answer.
