Leading Edge Height When The Ball Has Sat Down

There is a measurement that decides a great many fourth-rung results, is trivial to take with a steel rule, appears on no manufacturer's specification sheet anywhere, and which I have never once heard discussed by a customer before they walked in here.

Sole the club on a flat surface as you would at address. Now measure from that surface to the bottom of the leading edge at its lowest point. On a lot of modern irons that number is not zero. The edge sits above the ground, held up by the curvature of the sole, and how far above changes dramatically between models that share a loft, a lie and a length.

On rung one this is close to irrelevant, because the ball is sitting on top of grass and the edge has all the room it needs. On rung four, where the ball has nested down into settled rough until its equator is below the top of the canopy, that height is the difference between catching the ball and catching the middle of it.

Why nobody publishes it

Partly because it is genuinely awkward to define. Sole curvature means there is no single obvious reference point, and where you measure from changes the answer by a surprising amount. Partly because it interacts with bounce, and the bounce figure stamped on the sole is already doing approximately this job in the minds of most buyers.

Mostly, though, because it is not a flattering number. A club that presents a low leading edge digs on firm ground, which is why designers raise it. Raising it makes the club better on the second rung and worse on the fourth, and no marketing department wants to publish a specification whose honest description is this is the trade-off we chose for you.

Effective bounce, leading edge height and sole camber are three views of one geometry. Publishing one of the three and calling it the spec is how a club ends up feeling nothing like its number.

How we take it here

Flat granite plate, club soled at the lie angle it is actually built to, and a set of feeler gauges. We record the height at the lowest point of the leading edge and again three quarters of an inch toward the toe, because progressive sole grinds mean those two figures often disagree.

Then it goes on the card next to the fourth-rung reading, because on its own it means nothing. What matters is the pair: a club that presents an edge a fifth of an inch off the deck and still holds eighty-six percent of its speed out of settled rough has a good sole design. One that presents the same height and holds seventy-four has a bad one, or the wrong shaft, or both.

Read the last column downward. It rises, peaks in the middle of the range, and falls again. This is the single most consistent pattern I have recorded in nine years of keeping these numbers, and it is why the answer for settled rough is almost never the widest sole available.

Both ends of the curve fail, differently

A very low leading edge fails by burrowing. The edge arrives below the ball, grass packs in front of it, and the club decelerates before it gets there. You feel this as heavy, and the ball comes out short and low with no spin.

A very high leading edge fails by skating. The sole rides over the top of the compressed grass, the edge never gets underneath, and it meets the ball somewhere around its equator. You feel this as thin, the ball comes out fast and low, and the number on a launch monitor looks deceptively healthy until you notice there is no height on it.

Between those two there is a window, and its position moves with how the individual golfer delivers the club. A steep, descending delivery can use a higher edge because the angle of approach does the digging. A shallow, sweeping delivery needs a lower one or it will never get under anything.

Which is why we do not have a recommended number

People ask for one. There is no honest answer, because the correct edge height is a function of your attack angle, your typical lie, the species in your rough and how heavy the ground is that month. What we can do is measure four candidates and let the plot pick.

The wedge exception

Everything above applies to irons. Wedges are a different argument because the grinds deliberately remove material from the heel or the trailing edge so the golfer can change the presented height by opening the face. That is a real and useful capability, and it is why a wedge session runs its own separate block rather than being folded into the iron ladder.

What you can check yourself

Take your seven iron and your pitching wedge, sole them both on a hard flat floor, and look along the leading edges from in front. If one of them is visibly sitting higher off the ground than the other, you have found a step in your set, and there is a reasonable chance it explains why one of those two clubs feels reliable out of thick grass and the other does not.

Bring both in and we will measure them properly. Sometimes the fix is a set change and sometimes it is a bend, and the bend costs nine dollars.

The short version

Every candidate build gets hit off mown grass, off bare valley ground, out of a kikuyu collar, and out of settled rough before anybody writes a spec down. If a club only behaves on the first surface, it does not leave with you.
