It Is On The Pad By The Phone

Requests print to a sheet next to the bench rather than into an inbox somebody checks weekly, which means it will get read before the end of the day it arrived and probably within the hour.

Nothing has been charged and no time has been reserved yet. The slot becomes real when you and Bao have agreed one out loud.

Three Things, In This Order

Same working day

A phone call

Usually within a few hours if the bench is open, first thing the next opening morning otherwise. Requests arriving Friday evening get answered Tuesday, because Monday belongs to the grass. The call runs about ten minutes and covers the four questions on the booking page.

Once a time is agreed

A fifty dollar deposit

Taken over the phone or in person, and it comes straight off the session fee. It is refunded in full with a day's notice. In a shop with one bay a missed slot cannot be resold on the morning, which is the whole reason it exists.

The day before

Candidates come off the rack

Based on what you wrote about the bag, likely heads and shafts get pulled and laid out so no part of your bay time is spent hunting through racks. Nayeli also checks the plot condition log and will call you if a patch is not representative enough that week to trust.

On the day

Turning Up At Bay 3

  • Park in the rear lot, not on Blackstone. The three spaces against the roller door are kept clear so clubs can be carried straight in.
  • There is no reception. Walk in through the open roller door and somebody will be at the bench.
  • Bring your clubs, your golf shoes, and the ball you actually play rather than a premium sleeve bought for the occasion.
  • Allow the full advertised length. An iron session that starts twenty minutes late in July gets its outdoor half squeezed, and the outdoor half is the part you came for.
  • One guest, one chair. Dogs in the bay, not on the plot.
If the phone stays quiet

Ring Us Rather Than Assume

Occasionally a number arrives with a digit transposed, and occasionally a call from an unfamiliar Fresno line gets treated as spam by a mobile and never rings through. If a full working day has gone by with nothing from us, please call the bench directly instead of assuming a slot exists.

It is a two-person shop with a third answering the phone. Nobody is ignoring you, but things do occasionally fall behind a set that took longer to build than it should have.

Three Notes From The Ladder Journal

What Speed Held Actually Measures, Rung By Rung

A club that keeps ninety-six percent of its rung-one ball speed on bare ground and eighty-four in settled rough is telling you something a single indoor average never will. Reading the shape of that decline is most of the job.

The Collar Rung: Where Kikuyu Takes Its Cut

Kikuyu does not slow the ball down the way tall fescue does. It grabs the hosel instead, and the speed you lose is a symptom of a face that has already turned before the ball leaves.

Leading Edge Height When The Ball Has Sat Down

Two irons of identical loft can present completely differently to a ball nesting an inch below the top of the grass. The number that decides it is measured at address and almost never published.

The short version

Rough Fit Lab is a two-person bench on North Blackstone with a turf plot behind it. Every candidate build gets hit off mown grass, off bare valley ground, out of a kikuyu collar, and out of settled rough before anybody writes a spec down. If a club only behaves on the first surface, it does not leave with you.

  • Turf plot behind the bay
  • No brand quota, no house line
  • Build sheet printed, not emailed
